Covid-19 (Coronavirus) Statement – CTRF

Covid-19 (Coronavirus) Statement – CTRF

The Cairn Terrier Relief Fund (CTRF), often called Cairn Terrier Rescue, was established in 1969 by a dedicated group of breed exhibitors to assist Cairn Terriers that have been abandoned, maltreated or are in any other state of distress and to take care of dogs whose owners can no longer care for their pet due to illness or misfortune.

This remit remains our mission statement today over 50 years later and a few weeks ago we took a conscious decision to take each day and each case individually for as long as we could, rather than introduce a blanket policy statement in light of the Coronavirus situation.

However things are changing very quickly following government advice over the weekend, with more change probably still to come, so it feels like the right time now to join other breed rescues in clarifying our position.

The CTRF is run by a team of unpaid volunteers.  Several of the team have already been self-isolating, others started this weekend.  Other trustees are still working and working more hours than usual to cover for colleagues who are off sick or self-isolating.

To safeguard our trustees, their families and society in general we need to take a pragmatic view of what assistance the CTRF can realistically offer over the coming weeks and months.

We are always available for support and advice via email, phone and social media – if you have any concerns or questions we have a wealth of knowledge and experience about Cairns in our team so please do get in touch, no question is to small or too silly to ask.

If you have rehomed a Cairn from us and due to the Covid-19 virus you are struggling financially, we may be able to offer support to help with dog food costs – please email our Secretary via [email protected] for further details.

We will not be routinely rehoming dogs for the foreseeable future.  If there is an exceptional, extremely acute welfare emergency over the couple of months we will do what we can to assist, depending on the situation in the UK at that time, as this is an unprecedented situation that changes by the hour some days.

Some of you have asked whether dogs can carry the Coronavirus or be affected by it.  The latest and most up to date UK Veterinary advice regarding Covid-19 and dogs is as follows:

Our committee and Trustees would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our supporters, adopters, fosterers, helpers and social media followers for their continuing help, support and community spirit.  We look forward to seeing your posts and your updates about your Cairns to help us keep smiling through the difficult period ahead of us.
